I've written these instructions based on V2i Protector version 2.01. DriveImage 7 is esentially the same product except that it is missing a couple of the features of V2i Protector such as creating Incremental Backups.

What is DriveImage / V2i Protector?

DriveImage and V2i Protector from PowerQuest (now owned by Symantec) allow you to make images of your HD much like Ghost. The advantage of these products is that they allow you to make images of your drives from within windows while you continue to use your computer. The installation CD doubles  as a bootable recovery disk. Since it is based upon Windows PE it has the advantage of being able to use any Windows XP Mass Storage driver or Network Driver without the need for any DOS level driver.

If anyone should need to modify the DriveImage /  V2i Protector disc to add additional Mass Storage or Network Adapter drivers, please  let me know. I'm working on a document for this procedure now.

1) Extract the boot sector from the CD using a utility such as UltraISO. Copy the bootsector to the Easyboot\Disk1\EZBoot directory. Let’s assume you name the bootsector  “V2I.BIN”. In EasyBoot, you should use the command “Run V2I.BIN” to launch V2i Protector.

2) Create in the \Easyboot\Disk1 directory a new directory that is 4 characters long. This is important since we will need to modify files, changing references to “I386” to whatever name you choose. Use all CAPS. In this example we will use the name “V2ID”.  Copy the contents of the i386 directory from the V2i CD to this directory.

3) From the root of the V2i CD copy the files “WIN51”, “WIN51IP”, and “WIN51IP.SP1” to the Disk1 directory.

Note: If you already have these files in the Disk1 directory then you do not need to bother copying these from the V2i Protector CD.

Also copy the following directories from the V2i CD to the Disk1 directory:

EN
EXECUTE
UTILITY

Note: If you require support for other languages then you may need to copy the following directories as needed:

DE – German
FR – French
JA – Japanese

Also, note that in each of these language directories (including EN for English) there are probably files that you can get rid of such as the PDF documents. This may save you a little space but I have not yet experimented with this to determine which files you must have and which you can get rid of.

4) Use the REPLACE TEXT feature of EasyBoot to modify the bootsector that you copied in step 1. You should search for “I386” and replace it with the name of the directory you created in step 2. In our example this is “V2ID”.

Note: Make sure to use CAPS in both the search and replace string.

5) Use the Search and Replace tool again, this time modifying the SETUPLDR.BIN file in the “V2ID” directory. Search for “i386” and replace with “V2ID”. Note that this time the “i386” has a lowercase “i”.

6) Edit the file “TXTSETUP.SIF” in the same directory and change the value for “SetupSourcePath” from “\” to “\V2ID”. You can use notepad to do this, however, it is very important to check the file after you save it to be sure that notepad has not appended a “.txt” extension to the end of it!

7) Finally, if you do NOT want to see the message that says “Press any key to boot from the CD…” then delete the file named “BOOTFIX.BIN” from the “V2ID” directory.
